Ocean Comet has beam of 45.00 meters, depth of 24.40 meters and a draft of 17.93 meters, when the ship is fully loaded. The ship is pretty large and the Gross Tonnage, which Ocean Comet has 89,603 GT. Ocean Comet is very interesting built bulk carrier, with new innovation technology for decreasing water resistance, to decrease fuel and lubricant oil consumption and increasing of productivity of propulsion system. The main engine of Ocean Comet is MAN B&W 6S70MC Mark VI with full power of 16,860 kW at 91.0 rpm. The ship can reach high speed 16.3 knots and the cruising speed is about 15.2 knots. The ship has a large cargo spaces divided into nine holds covered with nine hatches, five pairs of water ballast tanks, and fore peak tank , aft peak tank and the No.6 cargo holds that can be used as water ballast tank.
Ocean_Comet_propeller.jpgThe hold are with cossed angles for easy and very useful discharging of the cargo into ports. This is used from many years in ship-building because such crossing increase the ship's stability and also allows faster dischrging fo the vessel. Ocean Comet is modern and very useful and profitable ship of Fair Wind Navigation S.A., which is designed to carry all kind of bulk cargoes. We already told that fuel consumption of the ship is reduced. The Namura flow Control Fin (NCF) and high-efficiency N-PAI NHV type propeller are also used for improved propulsion performance and fuel oil saving. Coral Emerald

Coral Emerald Coral Emerald is the newest bulk carrier from the fleet of Picer Marine S.A.. The ship has deadweight of 75,632 metric tons and from the group of Panamax bulk carrier. The ship has a length of 225 meters, a beam of 32.26 meters and a draft of 14.00 meters. These measurements can carry gross tonnage of bulk cargo of 38,893 metric tons. Coral Emerald has a cargo holds’ capacity for 89,201 cubic meters. The ship is the newly built by Sanoyas Hishino Meisho Corp. into the ship-yard of Mizushima Works. The vessel is the 69th of the series of Sanoyas Panamax and the 43rd of the 75,500 metric tons type, with largest permitted beam to pass through Panama Chanel. This is very important for every ship-owner that will operate with this vessel. Passing through Panama Chanel reduce the outcomes of the ship-owner with more than 20% per voyage, just with avoiding the longer route under the South America.

The bulk carrier Coral Emerald has 7 cargo holds for bulk cargo. All the holds are with hopper bottom for more efficient loading. This increases the loading and discharging speed with more than 5%, which for bulk carrier is very useful and important. The engine room is located aft, just tike to the most of the modern merchant vessels. That engine of Coral Emerald is MAN B&W 7S50MC-C. The main engine is low speed, long stroke and 2-cylesThe average cruising speed of the vessel is about 14.5 knots, too high speed for bulk carrier, but very useful, when we are talking about decreasing of outcomes and times for delivery. The hatch covers are of the type - side rolling, driven by electro hydraulic motor and chains. That helps for the vessel to open and close very secure and fast the hatches, and even in forecast of raining the vessel is loading or discharging till the rain starts. The ship is well optimized for reducing outcomes and expenses about voyages, and also reduced the CO2 emissions into the air. This is new generation vessel built in May 2007, and carries all ecological certificates, because the ship should not only be a profitable machine, but also to prevent pollution in the air and water.

Shin Sanyo Maru

Shin Sanyo MaruShin Sanyo Maru is newly built bulk carrier of the ship-owner company Antlers Maritima S.A. The ship was finished in February 2007, when was the fist test from the ship-owner. Shin Sanyo Maru is vessel built in Japan, into one of the best qualited ship-yards, and this is exactly Oshima Shipbuilding Co. The vessel has deadweight of 89,999 metric tons and is specialized to carry bulk cargoes. The vessel has a length of 235.05 meters, a width of 43.00 meters and a draught of 18.55 meters. Shin Sanyo Maru is middle size vessel, but pretty large bulk carrier. The ship is designed to be very effective and a lot of profitable. That is why the ship has maximum allowed Panama channel requirements, by width and draft. Shin Sanyo Maru is one of the series of double side coal carriers, which the shipbuilding company created. All the vessels are designed with innovative engine, form and size. Everything is more efficient, than the every other vessel. The cargo capacity of Shin Sanyo Maru is 108,929 cubic meters, divided into 5 cargo holds. The holds are designed specially with wider inner bottom area, which is making the discharging of the vessel easier and the cargo in the hold with nearly 5% more, than the every other hold shape.

Shin Sanyo MaruShin Sanyo Maru is vessel, which is looking large and beautiful, in spite of its middle size. The ship has main engine Mitsubishi 6UEC60LSII with power of 16,200 kW at 105 rpm. The economy (cruising) speed of the vessel is 14.5 knots, but the maximum speed that this ship can reach is 16 knots. The hull is sophisticated, which together with the main engine of Mitsubishi is making of great ship, with lower emissions of CO2, higher speed at lower fuel consumption per hour. Shin Sanyo Maru is vessel, which is made to be effective and profitable. The paint on the ballast tanks is with different structure and tar-free epoxy, which is more ecological and more effective, because the segregation period of that paint and protection, which it gives to the steel is higher. That is making this vessel ecological, secure and very, very cheap for support.

The navigational equipment on board is the newest possible one. The GPS is plotting to the ARPA the exact position of the ship, with mistake of less than 10 meters. The electronic chart equipment is decreasing the work of navigational officer of plotting ship’s position to the chart, and takes in the signal from AIS and ARPA and gives advices to the ship officer for the better maneuvering toward other ships. The ship is very maneuverable and for the officer is just like a game to sail with this vessel. The ship has no bow thrusters, but in the port it is mooring very easy with just a little support of tugs.

Owari Maru

Owari Maru The large bulk carriers are interesting in engineer point of view in all the times. The newly built vessel Owari Maru is one bulk carrier with definitely very interesting structure and outlooking. The vessel is designed to carry ore, which is very heavy product and situates the center of weight very low and the rolling of the vessel will be a serious problem for her safety and for condition of the crew while sailing through the oceans. The deadweight of the vessel 229,013 metric tons and the gross tonnage of the vessel is 113,928 metric tons. The measurements of the whole ship are pretty big. The overall length of Owari Maru is 319.58 meters and the length between perpendiculars is 308 meters. The beam of the vessel is 54 meters and draught is 24.3 meters. The draft, when Owari Maru is fully loaded is 18.12 meters. This measurements are making this vessel too big and large for sailing wherever it wants, so the restriction for Panama channel still exist. The ship is property of the ship-owner company Samarinda Maritima S.A. and the building yard is Namura Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. The vessel is one of the most modern bulk carriers and the shape is designed specially to reduce the consumption of fuel and to increase the effect from the engine power. The main engine of the vessel Owari Maru is MAN B&W 6UEC 85 LSII diesel, which is giving the full power of 22,432 kW to the ship. This is enough for the vessel to sail with the economy speed of 15.1 knots, while the maximum speed is 16.4 knots. This is very high speed for such kind of vessel, carrying bulk cargo.

The innovations on board of Owari Maru are not so little as on the other ship. Together with differences with the shape of the vessel and innovative outlooking, we should add some other features in the engine control room, where the technique is from the new century. All indicators of the main engine are possible to be seen by the engine officer while staying on his place. There is a video from the main engine and also very sensitive sensors for temperature and rpm. So the Japanese company, designed this vessel decided that everything should be with exact data and no way to let the engine to get warm, or to work with wrong rpm. In fact the much of the fixing methods are automatic and very easy for usage and operating. That is why, the new series of bulk carriers are very qualited and very high interesting in designed point of view.

Cape Unity

Cape UnityAnd when we are talking about new “super-bulkers” (this phrase will become very useful, after fast developing of bulk carriers) we should not pass without paying attention to the vessel Cape Unity, which is also one large bulk carrier, with deadweight of 181,180 metric tons and gross tonnage of 90,092 metric tons. The large ship, with such measurements is always very interesting for watching and the cargo capacity for Cape Unity can be calculated to 199,724 cubic meters. The length of the ship Cape Unity is 288.93 meters and the beam of the ship is 45 meters. The draft of the ship is 18.17 meters. The ship is designed to carry ore, coal and all other bulk cargoes except grain. The vessel has a very interesting structure of the cargo holds, and this is the main feature of this ship. The cargo holds have difference in length and in this way difference in capacity. The cargo can be easily stowed and pretty easy discharged and loaded from the shore. The loading procedures are with more than 30% faster and the ship will almost don’t need to stay at port and to lose time for loading. This will increase the income from the ship-owner and together with this fact, will also decrease the expenses for harbor taxes. This is very nice for the ship-owner. The vessel was built in the ship-yard of Saijo Shipyard, by the ship-building company Imabari Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. This vessel is very high qualited and very good for sailing, according to the producers deom the company. The vessel has a very good main engine, which is MITSUI MAN-B&W 6S70MC-C diesel with a full power of 18,360 kW at 91 rpm. This is fast and very strong engine, which can give to the ship enough power for sailing with the maximum speed of 15.35 knots. The economy speed of the vessel Cape Unity is 13.98 knots (almost 14 knots). This is very good result for one bulk carrier and the expenses for one dey are decreased with more than 10%. That is very profitable and very good ship for its owner. The vessel has 9 cargo holds, made with single hull construction and double bottom. Cargo loading and unloading is possible in two different ports under the condition of the homogenous cargo with the same 45% bunker. The vessel is innovative with systems for reducing consumption of energy, which is called “hybrid fin”. This system is installed in the fore edge of the rudder just after the propeller, and the improvement of Imabari made this very useful for the ship. Also on the bridge the all new technologies, which are now required by IMO, are installed for easier sailing and to help the officers. This ship is also very ecological and the all requirements of SOLAS are filled at the maximum allowed way.

Bergeland

BergelandBergeland is one bulk carrier, property of Bergesen d.y. ASA, which is the one, who substitutes the largest bulk carrier in the world – Berge Stahl, while it is on dock. Bergeland was registered in the Stavanger in Norway, and sailing under IMO number 9002776. The vessel is alittle bit smaller that the giant Berge Stahl, but not so small, because it is second largest bulk carrier owned by Bergesen d.y. ASA and one of the largest vessels of the world. The deadweight of Bergeland is 322,941 metric tons, the length is 338 meters and the width is 55 meters. The ore carrier has a draught of 23 meters. These measurements are pretty large even for such vessel like Bergeland. This giant was built by Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. in South Korea. This is ship-yard with very different and opposite reputation, but I think that bulk carriers built from them are some of the most qualited and most safety vessels of the world. Bergeland is designed to transport iron ore all around the world, but operates mostly in the regular route from the mines “Companhia Vale do Rio Doce” in the eastern part of the Amazone, Brazil to the Europort of Rotterdam, the largest European port and 4th largest world port.

BergelandT can guarantee about this, because I know this port very good, and it is really large. But now our issue is not about the port, but for the vessel Bergeland, so its quay is not so far away from the entrance, because even largest tankers can vesit this port far away from the center, but near the entrance of the port, where with barges the cargo is transported to its destination. Just for example the iron ore from Bergeland is transported to ThyssenKrupp and Huttenwarke Krupp Mannesmann is Germany, where are situated some of the largest steel mills in Europe. Bergeland is vessel built in 1992. It is pretty old, built in time, when a large ship building is in the progress. The vessel is designer with single hull and automatic hatches. This technology is not so new, and not so ecological, because most of the ships built nowadays are with double hulls, to prevent water pollution. The cargo holds are seven, four long and three short. This is because the ore carriers cannot use the full cargo space, but they are using the full deadweight. The cargo is very heavy and this decrease the center of weight, to be on lower level and the ship becomes some kind of leaden toy soldier, which cannot overturn, but there is a high rolling. This is not good for the mechanisms, crew and ship construction. That is why the main idea of engineers is to increase the position of weight center by height and with this to decrease the stability of the ship (not so much of course) and to increase ship’s strength. And I think Bergeland is the vessel with good ratio between ship’s stability and strength.

NSS Honesty

The ore carrier NSS Honesty was built in the year 2007 from the ship-builder Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. The vessel has an overall length of 327 meters and length between perpediculars of 313 meters. So many people may wonder what I mean by length between perpediculars and why it is used. In dependence of the ships construction, bow form and design of the buld, every ship has a diferent angle of attack of the bow to the water. So this means that overall length of some ships can be same, but the cargo space to be different. That is the main reason to be used fore perpendicular and aft perpendicular. They are calculating the length of the vessel, cargo space, ship's stability and many important components from the ships science. The breadth of the ship NSS Honesty is 52 meters in the middle, which is the largest breadth of the vessel. The draught is 24.30 meters and the draft, while NSS Honesty is fully loaded reaches 18.10 meters. The deadweight of the bulk carrier is 229,584 metric tons and the gross tonnage is 113,628 metric tons.

These large and pretty good measurements for one bulk carrier (or ore carrier) need of large engine, which should be able to move this mass through the water. The main engine of NSS Honesty is Mitsui-MAN B&W 6S80MC with full power of 21,840kW at 79rpm. The low revolution engine is strong and can give to the vessel maximum speed 15.55 knots. The vessel NSS Honesty has a fuel consumption of 106 tons heavy fuel oil per day. But this happens only with normal speed under ballast, which is nearly 14.25 knots. The vessel is very interesting in designer point of view.

The cargo holads are designed to carry heavy cargo, with high density. But designers of the ship NSS honesty have one more question in front of them. The main ports of the vessel are situated in Australia, where the draft is restricted and the ship measurements too. The vessel NSS Honesty is designed to be perfect in designer decision for the Australian ports and is suitable for easy loading and discharging. the requirements in this part of the world is pretty high. IMO has special requirements about the Malaysian Archipelago, but the vessel covers all of them. The fuel system is developed with fuel tanks in the aft part, all with membrane structure to prevent water polution. The air polution is decreased with new reduced system for filtering the gasses thrown in the air. The CO2 emissions are decreased with more than 15%. This is very important ecological decision of Heyday Shipping S.A., the ship-woner of NSS Honesty.

Mineral Nippon

Mineral_Nippon.jpgThe vessel with name Mineral Nippon is one newly built and very large bulk carrier. The ship has a deadweight of 200,000 metric tons. The vessel is property of Southern Route Maritime, S.A. and the ship-builder was Universal Shipbuilding Corp. The vessel Mineral Nippon is pretty large with an overall length of 290 meters, length between perpenduculars, breadth in the middle of 50 meters, depth of 24.10 meters and draft in the middle 17.88 meters, while the ship is fully loaded. The exact deadweight of the vessel Mineral Nippon is 203,275 metric tons and the gross tonnage is 101,933 metric tons. The cargo hold capacity of the Mineral Nippon is 217,968 cubic meters. The main enegine of the vessel is MAN B&W 6S70MC, which gives enough power to the ship to reach the speed of 16.25 knots. The cruising speed of the ship is 15.73 knots. The fuel consumption of the ship is reduced to minimum amount, which is ecological and profitable for the ship-owner. The vessel has a high propulsion efficiency and newly improved hull form. The propulsion system is new and better for easier use of the main engine and to reduce the friction with water.

The main engine gives enough power to Mineral Nippon but reducing of the fuel consumtion comes not only from the engine. Very interesting innovation is the surf-buld, rudder finishing with bulb is provided after the propeller. The ship is equipped with a long stroke, for lower speed, 2-stroke turbo-charged diesel engine, which reduced the fuel consumption and energy saving. the bow is shaped with newly Ax-bow form, which can decrease the wave resistance off shore. The vessel has 9 holds for cargo, which are with newly improved system for loading and unloading and this increase the profitablity and the useness of Mineral Nippon.

Maliovitza

Maliovitza.jpgThe vessel Maliovitza II is part of the Navigation Maritime Bulgare fleet and specialized to carry bulk cargos. The vessel Maliovitza has a Gross Tonnage of 16,188 metric tons and the Net Tonnage of the vessel is 8,267 metric tons. Maliovitza II is one of pretty old ships of Navibulgar. The ship was built in 1983 in the shipyard of Varna, Bulgaria. The vessel has an overall length of 184.60 meters and length between perpendiculars of 172 meters. The beam of motor vessel Maliovitza is 22.80 meters and the draft while vessel is fully loaded is 14.15 meters. The vessel is sailing under Bulgarian flag and the call sign of Maliovitza is LZGE and the IMO number 8203359. The vessel is part of the fleet of NaviBulgar many years and is sailing mostly in Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea.

The vessel is not among the most beautiful or most modern ships. It is also not in very good condition, but for the purpose of its voyages it is going pretty good. The ships of NaviBulgar are not in the first ages, but more of them are pretty old, more than 30-40 years old, which is a great problem for sailing and cargo transportation in the vicinity. In spite of everything there are no large collisions and disasters with ships of this ship-owner from many years. All the tragedies comes from small Bulgarian companies, which are using old ships for getting some profit from the insurance. That is why sailing in Black Sea got some casuals last years. The vessels of Navigation Maritime Bulgare are old, and this is because of the bad reigning of the company last years, which in fact has a very good name all over the world. And let’s back to the introduction of the bulk carrier Maliovitza II, which is one of good looking and good engineering vessels of the company. The vessel Maliovitza II has 8 cargo hold, which gives space for 29,119.70 cubic meters of trimmed grain cargo. The fuel tanks have capacity for 1622 metric tons of IFO (heavy fuel oil used on older vessels, like Maliovitza II), 309.30 metric tons of MGO (light fuel – gas oil) and 41.50 metric tons for lubricant oil. The sludge capacity of the vessel is 52.48 metric tons and the buldge water collection is 91.10 metric tons. The vessel is using fuel IFO-180 with high emissions of CO2 left in the atmosphere and not so good energy characteristic, but it is typical for older ships, where some innovations of new engines are not included. Motor vessel Maliovitza has a main engine SULZER 6 RND 76 with a full power of 12,000 hp. The diesel engine was built in Poland in the year 1982 and you can see the specific of the engine, and it is typical for such motor not to give the full and most optimized power to the vessel’s propulsion system.

This is one of the old vessels of NaviBulgar, Bulgarian largest and most known ship-owner. The bulk carrier Maliovitza is pretty good and innovated for the years at sea, and was built in some of the best ship-yards of the world – Varna, Bulgaria. I think that some new vessels in the fleet of Navigation Maritime Bulgare will bring back the good name of the company.

Manasota

Manasota.jpgManasota is large bulk carrier property of the ship-owner DryShips Inc. The vessel was built in 2004 in the famous shipyard of Hyundai Heavy Industries. The bulk carrier has deadweight of 171,061 metric tons. The vessel is among the largest bulk carriers of the world. This is a great engineer outfit and the measurements of the ship are very large. The length of Manasota bulk carrier is 288.88 meters, the beam is 45.00 meters and the draft while the ship is fully loaded is 17.70 meters. This large vessel is very beautiful and high technology. The motor vessel Manasota is sailing under the flag of Malta, not due to the low requirements, but mostly because of the low taxes about owning a ship. The main engine of the vessel is MAN B&W 6S70 MC with maximum power of 22,000 hp. The vessel is not designed with double hull, because of the type of cargo it is carrying. The main cargo is grain in bulk, and the capacity of the cargo holds for grain is 191,422 cubic meters.

And I told that this vessel has a new and most modern design and outfits. I think that we should start explaining the ship’s innovations with the shape of the hull. It is standard share with crossed angles, because of higher speed and low water resistance. Here the designer tried to find the most optimized shape for large cargo capacity and low water resistance. With this optimization, the designers did crossed angles inside and outside and this helps to be optimized the hull shape. Also with this innovation the discharging is pretty easier, because there will actually have no angles in the holds. And the ballast tanks are situated into the diagonals and vessel is feeling absolutely stable and very high profitable. When talking about innovations, on board of Manasota there are also many new features about world shipping. The engine is created as the most modern engines with low CO2 emissions and high power at low rpm. This makes it strong, very efficient and environmental. And when the story is about ships, and shipping on the first place should be the nature and protecting it from prolusion. The fuel tanks are situated in the aft part of the vessel and there the bottom is made with double hull just to prevent pollution and to be easier for work on the engine party. You should see such large and interesting ship, because it is not only beautiful but also very helpful for the all ship sailing. And this is Manasota bulk carrier, property of Dry Ships Inc.

Tianluhai

Tianluhai.jpgTianluhai is one of the largest bulk carriers of the large ship-owner Cosco. The company is taking large part is maritime transport of the world, and the whole fleet of Chinese company is approximately 550 cargo ships. The ompany is operating with Container Ships, which department includes largest containers of the world, just like Cosco Guandzhou, Cosco Yantian and the series of Cosco America and 5 more sister-ships, but also the company have some large Bulk Carriers, just like today's article - Tianluhai. The ship was built in March 2005. The vessel has a deadweight of 174,398 metric tons and the flag, under which the bulk carrier is registered is Chinese. Tianluhai has a length of 289.00 meters and a beam of 45.05 meters. The vessel is very modern andthe measurements of such bulk carrier are really amazing, because this sent such ship to the group of Capesize Bulk Carriers. And this makes the ship really interesting and beautiful. So large ship is in need of strong and reliable engine, and Mitsubishi created such engine pretty good for vessel of Cosco. the main engine of Tianluhai gives enough power to the ship for speed of 15 knots, while the vessel is cruising and 15.8 knots maximum.

But all this information is very simple and most related to the engineer point of view. When one ship is built, and mostly for company like Cosco, this ship should be reliable and very, very profitable. And Tianluhai is exactly this, because the fuel consumption is decreased with 10% with new generation engine, used for newly built bulk carriers with this size. The ship is even larger than Panamax bulk carriers, of the same company (Hong Jing for example), but the fuel consumpion is with more than 4% less, which is giving a high profits for the company with high freight. Special paint used to cover the steel is decreasing the water resistance and this gives so high productivity for the propulsion system. Tianluhai is one very good building of Chinese ship industry and this is very important for the whole world of Maritime Transport. This ship is giving a new step in ships development.
